Save money, and the planet!

February 15, 2012

Being environmentally friendly is a constantly growing trend in the world today, and for good reason- we are responsible for the resources of future generations. Many believe that the changes they must make to live an environmentally responsible life involve making sacrifices they are simply not willing to make. For example, although it is important to reduce CO2 emissions, for many people it is simply not practical to ride the bus. For this reason we have put together a list of five ways to reduce your carbon footprint without even realizing it! Make a few changes to your home and regiment and not only will your be saving energy every day, you will also see a dramatic difference in the size of your wallet.

 1) Switch your light bulbs to LED bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs

Lighting is known to be the reason of 25% of electricity consumption in the average American home. For this reason, it is important to make sure you have LED or compact fluorescent bulbs. At a cost of about $2 per bulb, they save you $20 per 3 years and are said to last at least seven years.

2) Switch to a low flow shower head and toilets

Traditionally low flow shower heads and toilets are simply known for not getting the job done. They have taken your high pressure showers and turned them into depressing trickles, and one flush is simply not enough with low flow toilets.. This, however, is a thing of the past! Thankfully modern technology has saved the day again, giving us a high pressure, low waste alternative. These technology advances are aimed at saving not only water, but money!
3) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Get creative and find exciting ways to turn what was once considered trash into toys and decorations. If you are not the creative type, look at the types of items you buy and try and purchase items which can be reused. For example, as an alternative to using a one time, wasteful flip chart or post it note, consider using a product that can be used multiple times (even recycled when the times comes) such as a Magic Whiteboard or Magic Sticky Notes from Magic Whiteboard Products. Reusing an item over and over again saves you and the environment each use.

4) Turn lights off

Nothing is more aggravating when trying to save energy and money to come home to a light that has been left on all day. There is a solution to this! Available now are motion activated switches which turn the lights on when it detects someone in the room, and switches the lights off when no motion has been detected for several minutes. Never come home to a house with every light left on again. Another important thing to consider is switching electronic devices (computers, gaming units, DVD players, etc.) fully off when they are not in use. Often, electronics go on “stand-by” mode and waste electricity. Remember, less wasted energy equals more money!

5) Fix simple leaks

Although it seems simple, many times steady leaks go without getting fixed because they do not seem to be a big deal. A quick, simple leak fix literally saves you water and money 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Saving energy and being environmentally friendly is the responsibility of everyone. As you can now see, everyone has the ability to reduce their effect on the planet by making a few small changes to day to day life. Remember, saving energy is directly related to saving money. If you don’t make some changes for the planet, make changes for your bank account!
