Use a little Magic to help your child read!

February 3, 2012

It goes without saying that reading is a skill that every single student must master in today’s world. Although many of us taking it for granted, it is not uncommon for a student to have trouble when learning how to read. One effective teaching strategy is to use “sight words” (or the Dolch Word List) to teach kids what a word is simply by looking at the word as a whole, not sounding the individual letters out. These “sight words” make up 50-70% of any given material, making them crucial to the learning process.

The idea behind teaching kids these words is wonderful, but how do you go about creating a connection between the word and what the word represents  for the child? Magic Whiteboard Products has the solution for you! This is the perfect situation to put our Magic Sticky Notes to work. They are 4’’x4’’ reusable and recyclable dry erase static cling sheets. Simply stick the notes to items which you are teaching your child and write the word using a dry erase marker. For example, if you are trying to teach your child how to read the word “door,” you can write “door” on the Magic Sticky Note and place it on a door in your house. Now every time your child uses this door, he or she will be forced to read the note and associate the word with actual door. Once the child has the word memorized simply erase the writing on the sheet, remove it from the item, replace it on the next item to be learned and write the corresponding name; these sheets can be used over and over again.
